Last June, in the course of doing some research for the currently in-progress final Murray Whelan novel, I spent a couple of days sniffing around parliament house in Canberra. Ever dependable, the Labor Party marked the occasion with a special event. It dumped Kevin Rudd.
The press went bananas, ministers went to ground, rumours swirled, staffers dodged..
In short, I was like a pig in shit.
I quickly fired off my impressions – Shoulder Deep in the Entrails to Inside Story. The Drum picked them up and they subsequently appeared in Best Australian Essays 2010.
